Two employees of Northwest Helicopters have been transported to the hospital after a helicopter went down shortly after takeoff, according to owner Brian Reynolds.
The pilot and the mechanic had just taken off from their base on 85th Ave SW, right next to the Olympia Airport, when the helicopter experienced a tail-rotor failure. The total flight time was approximately 5 seconds, Reynolds said.
The helicopter itself was a Vietnam-era chopper used for fighting forest fires.
The two employees had non-life threatening injuries. The crash had broken the helicopter’s airframe.
The Tumwater Fire Department and Tumwater Police Department responded to the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation.
