19 protesters arrested at State Capitol after refusing to leave building

19 protesters with the “Poor People’s Campaign” were arrested in the State Capitol Rotunda on Monday evening after they refused to leave the building at closing time.

The group had a permit for their demonstration, according to the State Patrol, but refused to leave when the Capitol closed at 5:30 pm.

19 people were arrested on charges of second-degree trespass.

The organization said poor people, clergy and advocates are conducting a six-week period of nonviolent action by marching on the statehouse to “demand elected officials take immediate steps to confront systemic racism.”
