Man jumps into Capitol Lake in attempt to avoid police, later rescued

A man jumped into Capitol Lake this afternoon along 5th Avenue in an effort to avoid police, according to an officer at the scene.

The officer said they had been dispatched to a report of a disorderly subject, and when they arrived the man made a “swan dive” into the lake and swam over a hundred yards towards the Capitol Building side of the lake.

Olympia Firefighters deployed a dinghy from Marathon Park and pulled the man to safety at Heritage Park, where he was loaded into an ambulance and transported to St. Peters Hospital.

Olympia Fire (Engine O1, Truck O1, Batallions O1 and O2, and Aid O1), Olympia Police officers, and the Washington State Patrol all responded to assist.
