Man arrested after flashing airsoft gun, running from police near Ralph’s Thriftway

OLYMPIA — On Sunday, March 18, 2018, at about 7:10 p.m., Olympia Police were dispatched to a report of a subject who had been witnessed carrying a handgun in the area of 4th Avenue East and Puget Street. A citizen reported to 911 that the male subject, age 37, was carrying a handgun, apparently taking a photo of the gun with his cell phone as he walked. He appeared to be under the influence of something. The citizen was concerned for her safety and that of others based upon what she’d observed.

Officers responded to the area and contacted the subject, attempting to get him to comply with orders to stop. The male refused and continued walking with officers following. Officers observed a black handgun in his waistband. Multiple attempts to get the subject to comply with lawful orders to stop and get on the ground failed. Eventually the male began running toward (Ralph’s Thriftway) in the 1900 Block of 4th Avenue East.

Officers feared that the male may enter the store and become violent inside. Officers took positions to prevent the armed subject’s entry to the store. One officer then elected to use a less-lethal impact weapon to fire rubberized projectiles at the male, causing him to change course from the store. One of the projectiles struck the handgun, causing damage to it. Officers then followed the male, still in possession of the handgun, as he jumped a fence into a nearby backyard. The male was still refusing to follow the commands he was being given. Tasers were then used to subdue the male, who was then taken into custody. The pistol, which he’d discarded as he jumped into the backyard, was found to be a realistic pellet gun pistol.

The male was immediately evaluated by medically trained fire personnel and then transported to St. Peter Hospital for evaluation. He displayed symptoms of mental illness as well and was also evaluated by a designated mental health professional at the hospital. Once the subject was cleared by emergency department staff and mental health professionals he was booked into the Olympia City Jail for Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm and Obstructing Justice.
