Man robs downtown Olympia bank, attempts to flee via transit bus

Kenneth D. Etheredge, 52, has been arrested and charged for Robbery in the First Degree after he robbed the U.S. Bank downtown on the corner of Capitol & 4th, then attempted to flee via a Mason Transit bus destined for Shelton.

Police were dispatched to the bank at approximately 3:15 pm for a report of a robbery. A man in his 50s had passed a note to a teller demanding money, and fled on foot with the funds.

What the robber didn’t know was that the bank teller had implanted a GPS tracking device designed for bank robberies inside the money that was handed over.

Olympia Police were able to track the device to Mason Transit bus route #6X, destined for Shelton, which happened to still be in the downtown area. Police stopped the bus and promptly arrested Etheredge, and returned the money back to its proper owner.
