Vacant McCleary hospital building catches fire

McCLEARY – The vacant Mark Reed Hospital Building on Birch Street in McCleary caught fire early Monday morning.

Crews were dispatched to the building at 5:45 am Monday after a report of a fire alarm. When crews arrived, the east end of the building, near the ambulance entrance, was fully engulfed.

Firefighters from multiple Grays Harbor County agencies were able to stop the spread, with the help of a functioning sprinkler system.  Fire District 12 and Fire District 5 were dispatched for mutual aid.

The building has been of recent controversy in McCleary over the last year. Behavioral Health Resources is planning to turn it into a 16-bed mental health ward, and some residents of the small town were angry with this decision.

McCleary firefighters say the cause of the fire is still unknown at this time and it is under investigation. A fire investigation officer with the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Department will be investigating.
