Two lanes of northbound Interstate 5 through Olympia & Lacey areas will close this weekend for bridge repair work. This is anticipated to cause miles-long traffic delays this weekend and next.
The lane closures will occur between Boulevard Rd and Pacific Ave on I-5 NB. The lanes will close at 10pm Friday and reopen at 5am Monday on both weekends.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is asking drivers to avoid using northbound I-5 for in-town trips in Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater. If headed north, consider driving to the Martin Way or Marvin Road exit before getting on the freeway, or if headed south, consider driving to downtown Olympia before entering the freeway.
Crews will be working on the bridge over Pacific Avenue to rebuild the approach slab (that’s the piece of concrete that connects the highway to the bridge) and replace expansion joints (the part that allows the bridge to move with traffic and weather conditions).
Drivers may see periods of little or no construction activity during the lane closures while concrete cures before traffic can drive on it.
Before this project, the SB I-5 ramps to both US-101 (Exit 104) and Henderson Blvd (Exit 105) from 10pm Thursday to 5am Friday. Overnight drivers will need to use either the Pacific Avenue or Deschutes Way exit and drive through town to connect to US-101. There also will be lane closures on southbound I-5 approaching U.S. 101.
